17 May 2018 Capt. Tom

The rain kept most of the people away again today but a few showed up so we made our morning trip. The rain was mostly a drizzle and everyone kept fishing. We went back to the same area were we have been catching. The first was no good. We made a short move to anther spot and after a little wait we started to catch. We stayed on that spot and had a pick of shorts and keepers. You can take a look at the gallery and see some of the keeper stripe bass from today. We also had another big black drum. The weather cleared up in the afternoon but not enough people showed up. As of now the weather for tomorrow does not look good. They are calling for northeast winds 20 to 25 with gusts to 30 knots with rain. I will be there in the morning to see if the weatherman is right. Check the weather buoy on my home  page and see what the wind is doing. If its blowing stay home. Even in the bay that much wind is not nice. Looking forward to seeing everyone if it’s nice.

The Fishermen

Currently fishing for striped bass 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. Rods, tackle, bait, restrooms, cabin, full galley for meals, snacks & drinks. Fast, clean, fully equipped party boat. Capt. Ron Santee carries on the tradition of his dad in the 1950s. Years of experience, dedication to hard work, ensuring the best possible day on the water. Charters also available for up to 50 passengers. Click our name to visit our website for further info.

“We primarily fish the ocean, rocks, wrecks, reefs and open bottom. But on those days where it’s questionable, we have the calm sheltered waters of Sandy hook and Raritan Bay. Lot’s of spots to choose from. Atlantic Highlands is centrally located at the shore, in the middle of the state. Easy access for customers from NY, PA, Northern and Southern NJ.”

732-872-1925

5/14- Finally, a nice bite for us today with plenty of shorts for the action and several nice keepers for dinner. Had to wait just a bit for the outgoing and when it came the bite turned on. Doc & Scott Uri had high hook honors with a bunch of little guys. Pool fish went 16 pounds and was caught at the end of the day. Had several nice readings in a couple area’s while we were riding around so maybe things will start to settle up. Fresh Clams were the choice bait. Don’t let the weather man keep you home, today was beautiful on the bay! Back at it tomorrow. Capt. Ron

5/16- Slow start, tried a couple of spots with no success. Spotted some bunkers with a couple of bass in the mix. Jeremy got out the net, caught some bunkers then I went where I thought the bass would bite. Success, exciting fishing, landed several keepers and lost a few, all good size stripers. Larry had the pool fish at 25 lbs. Al had a hefty 18 lb bass, Lynn got a 17.5 lb keeper, Evan landed a 17 lb fish and Lynn got an 18 pounder that had to be returned after a quick photo. Chilly rainy day but the fishing was hot and all aboard had a good time

Opening day FLUKE on Friday 5/25 and Saturday 5/26 will be special early trips from 6 AM to 2 PM.
The fare for these trips is $75.

May 15, 2018 – Party Boat Angler Tuesday

We sailed early which was a plus as the ocean was nice in the AM, but the strong south wind into a hard ebb tide in the afternoon slowed the bite.   Some spots were okay with the Sea Bass and Ling and others were mostly Ling.   Inshore was much better than the deep.   Folks caught some big Sea Bass and Ling, but he pool went to a jumbo Winter Flounder caught by ANGLER regular Anna.

Our next trip is Thursday at 7:00 AM.   We normally do not catch much after a strong Southerly blow and it is blowing right now.

The spring weather this year has been some of the worst in years.

Saturday is still up in the air so check back or give me a call tomorrow  eve.  Sunday looks like the best day of the weekend and next week looks ok too. Thanks for looking in and hope to see you soon. Don’t forget that the Fluke season starts next Friday 5/25.

Tuesday 5/14 We can bring you and show u but…

It turned out to be a beautiful day with calm seas and winds. Picked at the stripers but mostly shorts with a couple of keepers in the mix again. We should have had more fish but the majority of the people on board left their rods in the rod holders and didn’t even watch them most of the time. As the saying goes about leading a horse to water, well the same applies here. We can take you to the fish and show you what to do but the fish don’t always hook themselves. At least you ;should be watching the rod for hits. We did not go out this morning with nobody showing up and the rest of the week does not look good with the rain forecast but not bad enough to stop us from sailing. We will be there to go but just say n. Thanks for looking in and here are a few pics.

Monday 5/14 report

We made the morning trip and went back to where we had fish the day before. We started off slow seeing a few shorts and then lost a big one(hook pulled), may have been a drum. Finally we landed a keeper and picked some more shorts

until another keeper striper  came along. At least we are getting some action with the shorts although hey are on the small side as pictured with mate Steve. Did not sail the afternoon as I had something to do and probably would not have got out anyway with the turnout. Sailing every day, 2 trips @ 8 SAM and again @ 1:30 PM, depending on weather and turnout. Fell free to call me if not sure ,hope to see you soon and thanks for looking in. Here are a few pics.

UPCOMING TRIPS – This month we have room on our upcoming 2-DAY LIMITED LOAD WORLD RECORD HUNT (May 13) and DEEPWATER EXPLORATORY TILEFISH TRIPS (May 20) as well as our regular 1.5-DAY TILEFISH TRIPS (May 11 & May 17)

We also have room on our Memorial Day Weekend 2.5-DAY NANTUCKET COD WRECK AND JIGGING TRIP that leaves Friday, May 25. Last year the Memorial Day trip saw EXCELLENT COD FISHING with loads of COD, POLLOCK, HADDOCK and WHITE HAKE on both bait and jigs. If you enjoy fishing for COD and POLLOCK this is the trip for you. We cannot stress enough that the federal government may close down this fishery in the near future so come out while you still can!

Our first OPEN BOAT SEA BASS TRIP of the season is 7:30 AM WEDNESDAY MAY 16. We have tried a few test drops on likely Sea Bass spots and have been pleasantly surprised. More and more Sea Bass should be moving in everyday as the water continues to warm and the inshore migration picks up steam.

We will also be sailing SUNDAY MAY 13 for LING leaving at 7:30 AM and returning around 3:30 PM. This trip is OPEN BOAT so you can just come on down.

If you are interested in any of our offshore trips please e-mail us at Info@voyagerfishing.com or call (732) 295-3019 and leave a message to make reservations.

FYI – The VOYAGER TRIP CALENDAR web page at http://voyagerfishing.com/html/trip_calendar.html shows info on all TRIP TYPES, DATES, DEPARTURE & RETURN TIMES, and FARES for both open boat and reservation-only trips. It also shows AVAILABLE SPOTS for reservation-only trips.

May 9, 2018

This past weekend we sailed on two offshore trips.   The first was our ULTRA-LIMITED LOAD COD Trip.   Fishing was much better than it’s been with high hooks having six or seven fish.   The Cod were nice fish in the 8-15 pound class and all were caught on bait.   We hope to add more of these trips as our schedule permits.

The second trip was a 2-DAY CANYON TILEFISH Trip.   Fishing was quite good with many making limit catches.   We had some really nice Tilefish on this trip.   Jerry Sullivan was the pool winner with a 43-pound Golden Tilefish and his buddy Jonathan Spreter chimed in with a 31-pound beauty.   We had a number of other fish in the 10-20 pound range.   You can see trip photos on our Photo Gallery page.

5/17-A big improvement from Tuesday. A few nice size seabass came over the rail. Keven Carr had 8 keepers, and Geno Kosty of Tuckerton NJ won the pool with a nice 2.5 lber. We expect the fishing to improve as soon as the weather straightens out. Due to high wind and rough seas , we have cancelled this Friday’s trip. Please text or call about the weekend, 856-313-5493.

4/30/18: Saturday was a little (lot) tough with the conditions. Swell from the southeast, no wind, and a hard current from the north made it a hard day for the Captain. We caught a few fish but if the conditions were better we would have done good. Lisa Mastrangelo won the pool with a nice 6-lb blackfish.

Now on Sunday, it was a totally different story, a nice wind made anchoring so much nicer and the boat sat nice over the wreck. We caught some real nice fish and the pool winner was Dennis Haney with a 10+ lber. The pics are on Facebook.

We will not be sailing again until May 15, which is the opening of sea bass. We will be sailing daily so let’s look at the marine forecast and pick the best day. See you there!

Peconic Star Express (631- 289-6899): In case you did not know it, they added a second boat the Peconic Star Express (see below), a beauty of 80 foot and 150 passenger and larger than the main fluke boat you see in the reports. It is for all intent and purposes’a brand new boat condition wise and looks wise. The day trips are for bass & bluefish with $95 adults, $85 seniors and $55 for kids 12 and under. As for the night trips for the special 25 person maximum allowed for bass it is $125. Starting June 7, they will not fish on this vessel Monday or Tuesdays as they run Block Island excursions leaving Greenport at 8 a.m. and leaving Block Island at 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesdays. This means you can stay over night at Block Island and come home Tuesday evening on the 5 p.m. boat. This also means you do not have to drive through the Hamptons to get to the Block island Ferry. You actually save time by driving the shorter route to Greenport and taking the Peconic Star Express to Block Island. Check the web site www.PeconicStarFleet.com.

A little background  on party boat fishing in NYC and some useful tips

In the past two decades or so, there has been a significant investment in waterfront access, with improved facilities and infrastructure. A vast improvement in water quality since 1972’s Clean Water Act changed the way we deal with pollution has meant the return of many species of fish to our local waters.

I am from New York City. I have had to work with what was in front of me. I may never enjoy the execution of a perfect 10 to 2 fly cast over a moving stream that lands right in the sightline of a nasty, ol’ daddy trout sitting just behind that rock right there, but I do know a thing or two about putting fish in the bucket.

Party Boat Fishing

“If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing rods.” -Doug Larson

Party Boats, sometimes known as Head Boats or Open Boats, are a category of commercial sport fishing boats that charges a fee per passenger for regularly scheduled trips.

Like a train or plane, the boat has posted departure and return times, holds a set number of passengers, and charges the same fixed fee for most voyagers. Kids and seniors get a discount on most boats. They will supply you with a rod, tackle and bait (some charge a small fee for the use of rods, some provide them free with your fare).

The number of anglers on a trip depends on the size of the boat, and the cost of the trip. The less the trip costs, and the bigger the boat, (also the shorter the trip), the more people will be on the boat. Skill levels of the fisherman vary greatly.

If the trip is taken during the local tourist season, and the trip is during the day, expect a number of ‘riders’ (people who go out just for the ride-not to fish) and extremely novice anglers. If you want to avoid the crowds take your trip during bad weather, off-season, long trips, or ‘limited party’ (costs more hence fewer folks).

You can find a good listing of these boats at the bottom of this page.

General Rules for Party Boats

Proper etiquette is a MUST for party boat fishing for all who sail. You may be with a group of friends; another group might have a family with kids; a third might be a group here from another country, everyone gets along.

I’ll give you a few tips on making it a fun day:

1) Always obey the Crew and Captain. Their goal is to keep you and all the other anglers happy, since without your money they will go broke. Most of the time, with a good professional crew, this is not a problem. They do this for a living and it is there business to put you on fish.

2) Always be aware of those around you (right, left, and when casting-behind). Watch out for kids. Most bad tangles can be avoided if you pay attention to your line. Otherwise, oh boy! “No pulling in the back!”

3) Be knowledgeable of local species, and local laws. Often a single illegal fish on a boat can result in very large fines for both boat Captain and the offending angler. When in doubt, ask the crew or release the fish. A few mates break the spines of nuisance species like dogfish. I am not down with this unnecessary killing and make a point of saying that when I hook one. Click for a current list of NYS DEC Fishing Regulations

4) Exercise patience, kindness, and courtesy. Cursing loudly, while common among most of us anglers when fishing alone, can offend others on a party boat. Never drink excessively. It is common respect not to get all banged up on a boat. “Don’t disrespect the Bing!”

5) Chill out. If your lines get tangled, don’t get frustrated or try to assess blame-it goes with fishing elbow to elbow, and can be a good way to make friends.

6) HAVE FUN! A party boat is a great place to meet other anglers and ‘trade lies’ as fishermen often do. There is more to fishing than just catching fish.

What should I bring on a party boat?

1) Food, Beverages. Hot coffee helps with the early morning chill. Hydration is key on hot days I recommend fruit juices and cold bottles of water. While I do occasionally indulge in a beer or two, I find that too much hurts my fishing abilities and makes me take too many trips to the ‘head’. Drinking a few beers is part of the experience for many anglers on a hot day, but remember it is a privilege afforded to you by the Captain. Some boats have decent galleys and sell food and drinks on board so call the boat’s Captain before your first trip for the low-down. I usually find it best to pack a couple of sandwiches for the trip.

2) A camera phone (sealing it in a Zip Lock Bag to prevent it from getting wet) for those special moments.

3) Extra Clothing. In the spring, it can be much cooler on the water then on land. Dress in layers. Even on warm days, bring an extra layer or two.

4) Rain Gear, if there is even a chance of weather.

5) Sunscreen and Polarized Sunglasses. You will bake in the sun. SPF on ears, face, under chin and neck. The reflection of the sun off the water is strong and can burn too.

6) An old towel or t-shirt to wipe your hands on.

7) Warm, non-slip shoes that can get wet.

8) Bring a cooler to keep your food and beverages cold and to bring your fish home.

9) Tools: Pliers, Scissors, Folding Knife, extra line, and a tackle box or bag that can get wet.

10) Sturdy fishing tackle. Just about every boat will have decent rods for you to use. If you are going to fish a few times each years, you will soon want to invest in your own. It can get personal.

11) A waterproof bag or heavy plastic bag to put you non-fishing gear stuff in. You are on the water and things get wet.

12) Any specialized baits not provided by the boat (call the boat first and check reports online or in the papers).

13) Cash in small denominations (usually I bring some ones and fives, in addition to my fare). You will need it to tip the crew (ask regulars what is customary), to buy extra tackle, to pay for fish cleaning, to buy snacks and to enter the pool.

14) Aspirin (or equiv.) and/or Dramamine (for those sea-sick prone-take one BEFORE you leave the dock).

15) A GOOD ATTITUDE! It is a great day to forget your city strife and experience a bit of nature. Enjoy yourself on the high seas!

Spend enough time on the sea and you will see many strange things. I have had days on the water when fish sacrificed themselves on every cast. Bluefish, when feeding, are as voracious as any shark of your imaginations. Big ones go 17+ pounds and they will rip up your arms if you hook into one. I have been lost, in fog on rough seas. I have seen a man die standing to my right as I caught fish on a night trip on the Brooklyn III on a Friday in 1978. I have lost fish so big that they devour my soul with their silent, deep sea mocking. Be that as it may, I love being on the water.

Party boat fishing is the easiest way to go from landlubber to fisherman in a New York minute. Here are some tips to get you on your way.
